FDA Drug Safety
Sharing and communicating
The Food and Drug Administration officials recently held a news
conference to answer concerns that the Institute of Medicine reported
last September.
The FDA in the past has taken years to acknowledge risks to millions
of patients that had been apparent to some researchers.
In a scathing assessment, the Institute of Medicine concluded that
the FDA was rife with internal squabbles and hobbled by under-financing,
poor management and outdated regulations. The institute, the most
important medical advisory organization in the country, suggested that
the FDA undergo 25 major changes, many of which would require
Congressional authorization.
